USPS First-Class Mail

The USPS's premium mail class — fastest delivery, address forwarding, and free return of undeliverable pieces.

Definition

USPS First-Class Mail is the United States Postal Service's premium mail class for letters, postcards, and small parcels. It offers 1–5 business day delivery, free forwarding to a customer's new address (when on file), and free return of undeliverable mail to the sender. As of 2026, First-Class postcard postage is $0.56 for a standard postcard.

Why it matters

For small business direct mail, First-Class is the right default. The address forwarding alone is worth the price difference over Marketing Mail — it ensures your postcard reaches the customer even if they've moved, and undeliverable pieces come back so you can clean your list. Faster delivery also means tighter campaign timing and better integration with phone follow-up.

Example

A dental practice mails recall cards via First-Class. Of 500 cards, 12 come back as undeliverable (the practice updates those records), and 8 more are forwarded to patients' new addresses — patients who never would have received the card on Marketing Mail.
